What Do We Make Of The Recent Mideast Peace Deals?
The Middle East has been in the news again, but this time it is on a positive note. Several Arab nations have made or intend to make peace deals with Israel. In doing so they are recognizing Israel’s right to exist and their sovereignty as a nation. However, many believers are acknowledging these peace agreements by stating, “ when you see peace in the Middle East Jesus will be coming soon.” The statement really is referring to what the Bible calls a deal between Israel and other nations and the building of the third temple.
According to Bible prophecy, in the last days, the man of lawlessness or the AntiChrist will broker a peace deal that will allow for the building of the third temple on the temple mount. The problem is that the temple mount area is the third holiest spot in all of Islam and the Al-Aqsa mosque is located there. It is the most contested piece of real estate in the world.
The man of lawlessness or Antichrist will make this deal, but will also break it after 3 & ½ years. Many theologians and scholars refer to the seven years after this peace deal is struck as the Tribulation and the last 3 &½ years as the Great Tribulation.
In the current situation, we see the enemies of Israel now becoming her friends and allies, or at least on paper.
So, many believers are assuming that because of this current peace that soon thereafter will come a peace deal over the Temple Mount, and then it will be broke and as per Biblical prophecy it will usher in the return of Jesus Christ, the King of Zion, King of Kings, and the Desire of the Nations. While this is certainly possible we really do not know all that will happen, and we need to focus on Jesus and His Word and what the Father may be saying over this whole process.
Why are the nations coming to Jerusalem in the first place? Ever since King David and Solomon’s temple and later on the day of Pentecost the nations have been coming to Jerusalem. Previously God scattered the nations from there to give the land to Israel so that she could be a light to the nations. Since Jesus has come in the flesh He promised to return. God scattered Israel and has been bringing the people back for over 100 years now.
It is God’s heart for the nations to worship Him and His Son in Jerusalem. Ultimately, this will play out around the throne in the Millennial Kingdom that Jesus will set up immediately after the Tribulation and His return. WE see this in Revelation chapters four and five. However, why do we have to wait until The New Jerusalem comes down?
In Isaiah 66: 12 God says that He will extend peace like a river over Jerusalem and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream.
In Isaiah, we find numerous verses where God says that the wealth or glory of the nations will come to Jerusalem. We see this repeated in the book of Revelation. We have for too long approached the end times and the Book of Revelation from a distance and with fear and intimidation. That is not the purpose and it is not how Our Lord wants us to approach it.
While the current Jerusalem is not the New Jerusalem and the Lamb of God is not seated on a throne there, we are to pray as if it is so because it will be soon. There is where the nations will gather and worship. Currently, people from many nations are streaming to Israel and Jerusalem in particular, not as tourists or to work, but to pray and worship and cry out for the salvation of Israel and the nations.
Let us use this opportunity to pray for Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, Qatar, and any other nation that has been an enemy of Israel but is seeking peace. Let us pray for their salvation and that they will be counted as the number worshipping around the throne.
The day will come when a peace deal will be brokered with Israel and broken soon after. Whether this is a step closer to that I do not know but I know it is a step closer to the return of the King and all nations must be prepared for that time.
