The Next Awakening And The End Of Racism In America:
Is There A Connection?
Many today are calling for the next Great Awakening and describing different aspects of what it will look like. Revivals and Awakenings have always been the product of prayer and seeking God and repentance. In any move of God, there has to be lasting change and often we see the social, church, government, and other types of reform. God uses hard times and events to turn them for His ultimate purposes.
We cannot overlook how hard the situation in America has become in the last few months and even years. But, it is not a hopeless or impossible situation. The government and other leaders have their own way to bring justice. This blog is not about protests and marches, and riots. It is about the heart of the issue that has plagued our nation since its earliest days.
From the beginning, while Europeans sought friendly relations with the Native nations here, it soon became evident that the desire for land, gold, glory, and the like would outweigh any ‘friendly’ relations that had been achieved. Many natives perished along the way and in the process, they gave up land and kept moving westward until they had nowhere to go except to allow the conquering governments to place them on a worthless piece of land that produced no food and keep them dependent on the government that put them there for food and basic sustenance.
On the other hand, the African slave trade reached these shores in the early 1600s and remained for over two hundred years. Massachusetts soon banned slavery by the 1680s, yet it remained a viable economic pursuit for parts of the country, and even a whole society was built as ‘the new aristocracy’ as a result. This was so much of a way of life and deeply rooted in that it led to a war where eventually these African slaves were given freedom, but it would take another one hundred years before they would begin to step into a sense of equality in this country.
Thus, racism has continued hangover this nation, and particularly in the south until I believe that God has had enough. Racism is not limited to color, but is the result of idolatry and putting your ‘tribe or people group’ ahead of another when the Bible clearly says that all of the nations belong to God. No race is greater than another. Protests, marches, and boycotts help solve certain problems, but in the end, there is no real justice until hearts are changed.
What we have before us is an opportunity to see God bring justice and break the spirit of racism over this country and over the south particularly. The answer is not more laws, or protests but true repentance and heart purging before God and man. Symbols like statues and flags are simply idols representing a period when one-half of the country rebelled and put their lifestyle and idols ahead of the needs of the whole country. What happened in 1861 was a treasonous act against our government but greater it was a spirit of haughtiness that placed one race and their idolatrous ways above another.
We have not fully dealt with this issue and God is not pleased, The only way to see real revival is when all of the church comes together in unity under the blood of Jesus and repents for racial prejudice, idolatry and pride. White, black, red, yellow all need to repent. The church is still the most segregated hour on Sunday at 11 am in America. Many churches that have a few blacks do so to say ‘oh look we are worshiping together, we are not divided.” This is a heart issue and requires repentance at all levels but especially among the leaders.
Then our government and other areas and we laypeople need to repent and cry out to God to forgive us of our idolatrous ways. Then and only then will we see a true Awakening or move of God come to America. It’s time for us to take a stand and cry out for true justice. True Justice only comes when God brings it from His throne. True justice requires one to come to the cross and repent and seek forgiveness and then forgive those that they have sinned against.
It is also a time to cry for intercessors, or those who will stand in the gap, to rise up and pray and intercede and make up the hedge and fill in the gap. God is calling for those who will lay aside their agendas and seek His face and come before His throne. This is the greatest hour in our nation. Will you see an Awakening or further divide?
Statues of men who stood for idolatry and racial divide have no place at all, anywhere. It is time to quit glorifying what happened as heritage. It is not a Godly heritage when we hold people in slavery and keep them down at any cost. Symbols like the confederate flag cause increased division and have no place in our society. How would you feel if you walked down the street in New York or Berlin as a Jewish person and saw Schwastikas everywhere? Our you drove down Himmler Ave? Thus we need to see these things through a different lens and empathize with those in our nation who see them as symbols of oppression. Further, they are idols and separate us from God and do not display the love of Christ.
Finally, we cannot sit idly by as the church in the south did and allow more injustice and oppression, or like the church in Germany did in WWII. We must repent, and take action, being led by the Spirit. Do not say what can I do? Be a true disciple of Christ and love the members of the races or people groups different than you. Let it begin there. Quit complaining about what people do and pray for them, and see the current circumstances as an opportunity for God to change hearts and minds and see a Great Awakening.
What greater time than now to come together and worship here around the throne as people of different nations. It is only through Christ that true justice will come. And that begins with repentance and coming together as one people under Christ. We see this played out in Revelation 7:9-10
“After this, I looked and behold a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the Lamb, clothed in white robes with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice ‘Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne and unto the lamb’”
Do you really think for one second that God or Jesus is pleased when they look down and see all of the haughtiness, pride, and division, and idolatry? Especially among the nations?
No! Like God said in Jeremiah 25: 31-32, “a clamor has come to the end of the earth because the Lord has a controversy with the nations. He is entering into judgment with all flesh.” Thus says the Lord of Hosts, ‘Behold evil is going forth from nation to nation, and a great storm is being stirred up from the remotest parts of the earth.”
God’s case with the nations demands justice and the only way to achieve that is through Jesus. God has a controversy called racism, and the idolatry that ensues with it. Evil has certainly gone forth from one nation to another here in America. We don’t have to look to China or Russia, or any other foreign nation to find oppression and injustice. The storm that has been stirred up is nothing new, but it must be dealt with now in America.
You may ask how much repentance needs to be done? I say like Jesus 70 x 7, or until the Holy Spirit tells you to stop. We need deep cleansing and purging spiritually, and when that is done we will see change as people’s hearts are emptied of racial pride and idolatry and replaced with the true love of God. Now is the hour to turn our hearts towards God and ask God for forgiveness and seek His face and repent, and then we can truly love our brother.
