The Bible and Nuclear War In Iran and The Middleeast
Once again we must go to God’s Word to find answers to key world events. UNless you live in total seclusion are under a rock you should be aware of the current tension in the Middleeast regarding Iran and Israel. Israel, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the United States, led by President Donald J. Trump are already at war with Iran in many ways. Iran continues to be the chief funder of state run terror in the Middle East primarily inside of Israel proper. Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and Hezbollah along the Israeli-Lebanon border are chief recipients of Iranian aid.
President Trump declared the Obama negotiated Iran Nuclear deal to be ‘a bad deal’ and rightly so. Sanctions have been imposed on Iran by many western Nations, and sales of Iranian oil as well as food and other aid going into Iran have dropped. However, Iran is not deterred in their ongoing desire to procure weapons grade Uranium. They inch ever closer every day. This is not only dangerous to her neighbors but to Israel and those nations who stand with Israel.
Iran and its leaders has long been a leading opponent of israel and continues to seek nothing short of her destruction, and ultimate annihilation of the Jewish people. While we know that this is a spiritual battle, nevertheless their are real, wicked leaders who continue to pursue anti-semitism and hatred of all thing Israel. It is as if Iran is the antithesis of Israel. Iran’s population is predominantly Shia Isam. Having established that Iran has become and is a genuine threat to peace not only in the Middleeast but the entire global community, the question we must ask is whether or not the Bible addresses Iran and a nuclear war, or at best Iran and war with Israel in the latter days.
Iran was formerly known as Persia and is thus found in Holy Scripture as Persia. This is the same Persian empire that is written about in Daniel, Esther, Ezra, and Nehemiah. Likewise it is also the same Persia listed in the Gog-Magog war in Ezekiel 38. The fact that Persia played such an integral part in the early prophetic history of Israel and the world cannot be overlooked when considering any study of the end-times and Israel. Daniel saw visions that pointed to the kingdom of the Medes and Persians and Esther (Hebrew Hadassah) was actually the queen for a period of time over all of Persia.
Persia has also had a long history of anti-semitism and we see that in the story of Esther and Haman. Haman is an anti-Christ type figure who obtained an order from the king to legally destroy all “Jews” in the Persian empire, which was quite vast. This plan was thwarted with divine intervention using queen Esther who placed her life on the line before the king. Her selfless acts ultimately led to not only the salvation of her people but the death by hanging of the wicked man haman.
Later we see another Persian king, Cyrus, give the order to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. There was much opposition to this by many of the Persian leaders, including Sanballat and Tobias. Ezra and Nehemiah were ridiculed, taunted and opposed on every corner as they kept up the work to rebuild the temple. This same spirit that opposed the rebuilding of the temple and previously sought to annihilate the Jews still exists and has grown in strength and power. We see unparalleled opposition to the return of the Jews to Israel and likewise vehement threats to ‘wipe Israel off the map” coming from Iran.
Iran or Persia has been used for good in the past to help God’s purposes for His people. Ultimately those plans include all of the nations of the world gathered in Jerusalem worshipping Jesus Chrsit. But, we are not quite there yet. Before we reach that point in time many things have to take place, including the war of Gog-Magog found in Ezekiel 38-39. Later we see in Zechariah 14 God wiping out or at least bringing much death to the nations who attack Israel, especially in Jerusalem.
In Part 2 I will dig deeper into the coming wars involving Israel and Persia or Iran’s role. For now suffice it to say that Persia has long been a major player in Israel’s future and will continue to be. Despite the evil agenda that drives the current leadership in Iran seeking Israel’s ultimate destruction we are hearing of the church in Iran growing. Yes, there is much persecution , and there is certain death to those who leave Islam, bu many are turning to the Lord.
It is the salvation of men’ s souls that is the end goal. Persia has had both good and bad reports throughout history in regards to Israel. While the Bible is clear that Persia will be one of the nations that attacks Israel, we must still pray for the Persian or Iranian people and that they come to know Jesus or Isa as He is known in the Quran. The next part will deal with war and Russia’s involvement according to scripture. I will conclude with a look at the aftermath and what role if any Persians will have in the coming kingdom. Please pray for the people of Iran and the persecuted church in Iran.
